Tony Thompson
TONY THOMPSON was the lead singer of Hi-Five, which started in 1989. He was born Anthony Ulysses Thompson, Jr. on September 2, 1975, in Waco Texas. Though he was born Anthony Ulysses Thompson, Jr., he was best known to his fans as Tony Thompson the singer with a unique voice.
As, the lead singer of the R&B platinum group Hi-Five, which was signed to Jive Records and released their first album, in 1990. This album went multi-platinum and was produced by award-winning hit maker Teddy Riley; it included such singles as “I Just Can’t Handle It”, “I Can’t Wait Another Minute”, and their biggest hit to date, “I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)”, which went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Tony and the group enjoyed mainstream success and received comparisons to many of their R&B counterparts, namely New Edition.
HI-FIVE second LP, Keep It Goin’ On, came out in 1992. Several tracks from this album, including “She’s Playing Hard to Get” and the R. Kelly-penned “Quality Time” received major airplay and appeared on Billboards top 100 songs. In 1993, Hi-Five produced a third album, Faithful, which featured the songs “Unconditional Love” from the Movie Menace to Society and “Never Should Have Let You Go” from Whoopi Goldberg’s’ Sister Act II. the group had 10 top singles on U.S. Billboard’s Hot 100.
TONY sang with Hi-Five from 1989 to 1994. Unfortunately, he left us too soon at the age of 31 on June 1, 2007. He was survived by his son Tevin Thompson and will forever be missed by his family, friends and fans.
Hi-Five continues to keep Tony’s dream alive by doing what he loved most entertaining the fans, singing, creating new music in his honor and protecting the legacy of Hi-Five.
